Five rules for planning Sri Lanka
Distances lie, drive times don't
The island looks small, but winding roads mean Colombo–Ella is a 5½-hour drive. Plan with hours, not kilometres - our distance calculator gives real times.
Two or three nights per stop
One-night stands mean living out of a bag and seeing hotels, not places. The itineraries below average 2–3 nights per base for a reason.
Match the coast to the month
Nov–Apr: south & west coasts shine. May–Sep: the east (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) has its season. The hills are best Dec–Apr but work year-round.
Book the fixed points early
In record-year 2026, reserved train seats (30-day window), Yala jeeps and small boutique hotels genuinely sell out. Lock those first; keep the rest flexible.
One island, many speeds
A car with driver covers the most ground; trains are the most memorable; buses are the cheapest. Most great trips mix all three - each itinerary notes what fits where.
Pick your itinerary
Filter by length or style. Every route is buildable with a car-and-driver, and most work with public transport on a slower clock.
