Distances lie, drive times don't

The island looks small, but winding roads mean Colombo–Ella is a 5½-hour drive. Plan with hours, not kilometres - our distance calculator gives real times.

Two or three nights per stop

One-night stands mean living out of a bag and seeing hotels, not places. The itineraries below average 2–3 nights per base for a reason.

Match the coast to the month

Nov–Apr: south & west coasts shine. May–Sep: the east (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) has its season. The hills are best Dec–Apr but work year-round.

Book the fixed points early

In record-year 2026, reserved train seats (30-day window), Yala jeeps and small boutique hotels genuinely sell out. Lock those first; keep the rest flexible.

How many days do I really need? ▼
Seven days covers the essentials at a push; ten is the sweet spot for the classic loop; fourteen lets you breathe. Under a week, pick one region (hills OR south coast OR Cultural Triangle) rather than racing the loop.
Should I book hotels before arriving? ▼
In 2026, yes - at least for the first nights, festival periods (Kandy in Perahera season), and small boutique stays in Ella, Galle Fort and Mirissa. Mid-range city hotels can still be booked a day or two out.
Car with driver, or public transport? ▼
A car with an English-speaking driver ($70–130/day all-in) is the default for most first trips - flexible, door-to-door, and the driver doubles as a guide. Trains and buses cost a fraction and are experiences in themselves; the best trips ride the famous train legs and drive the rest.
Can I do these routes in reverse? ▼
Every route works both directions. Clockwise vs anticlockwise mostly changes where your beach days fall - many travellers prefer ending on the coast to unwind before flying home.
Which itinerary if I'm coming in July or August? ▼
That's east-coast season: the East Coast Summer route (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) is at its best, the Cultural Triangle is dry, and Kandy hosts the spectacular Esala Perahera. The south-west coast will see monsoon showers - swap Mirissa beach time for the east.
