Magul Maha Viharaya: Ancient Buddhist Temple In Ampara

This Archaeological Shrine is one of the must visit places in the Eastern Province and is a unique place that explores our island-wide heritage. Although local and foreign tourists pay close attention to the historical ruins of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, little attention is paid to the historical sites of Ruhuna. Ruhuna (Rohana) Maha Viharaya or Magul Maha Viharaya can be called as a place of worship of such ancient value.

Magul Maha Viharaya, Located in the Lahugala area of Panama in the Ampara District. From Siyambalanduwa Junction on Monaragala Pottuvil A 4 Road. Turn off at Pansalgoda Junction which meets at a distance of about 22 km. M. About 1/2 of the way through, you will find this shrine of historical and archaeological value.

The history of the Magul Maha Viharaya

Legend has it that the mother and father of King Dutugemunu, the most talked about king of Ceylon, married Viharamaha Devi and King Kavantissa.

Legend has it that it was built during the reign of King Kavantissa around 205 - 162 BC. Legend has it that King Kelanitissa Bilidun Vihara Maha Devi landed safely near the Pottuvil Sea Temple and that this temple was built at the place where King Kavantissa married her. Hence it is said that this temple is called Magul Maha Viharaya.

A house of idols, a dagoba, a monastery, a sub-hall and a Bodhi tree were built here. There is also a special moon lamp located here. That is to say, an ivory farmer with an elephant is also depicted in this moonstone.
