Looking away from Kadugannawa on the Colombo-Kandy road you can see a rock shaped like Sigiriya. That is this Bible Rock (Bathalegala). Bathalegala is known as the "Bible Rock" because it looks like a bible in the distance. Bathalegala is also known as "Little Sigiriya" as it has a similar shape to the Sigiriya rock. Batalegala is located in the Hathgampola Grama Niladhari Division of the Aranayake Divisional Secretariat in the Kegalle District. It is about 540 feet high and 2780 feet above sea level.
Kegalle --> Mawanella --> Gavilpitiya --> Hathgampola School --> Batalegala.
You can ride a motorbike, a three wheeler or even a small car near the rock. It takes about half an hour (500m) to reach the top of the rock from the foothills. The road near the rock is narrow and has a steep climb.
On the way to Batalegala and at the top of Batalegala you can see the leading part of Aranayake Samasara mountain. There is also a large expanse of the Batalegala rock. It covers a large area such as Kegalle, Gampola, Kadugannawa, Mawanella and Balana. At the top you can clearly see places like Asupini Falls, Ambuluwawa, Alagalla Range and Utuwan Kanda.
The top of the Batalegala hill is a large plain and looks like an observation deck built to see the beautiful scenery on both sides. You have to be careful in that area because of the strong winds.
