Kirinda Vihara Maha Devi Temple

Kirinda Vihara Maha Devi Temple

Description

The Kirinda Maha Viharaya can be reached by traveling about 07 miles on the Tissamaharama - Kirinda road. Kirinda belongs to the Tissamaharama Divisional Secretariat. In ancient times this was called 'Meda Viharaya'. This shrine has an important place in the history of Ruhuna.

King Kelani Tissa sacrificed his daughter Vihara Maha Devi to the sea to save the people from the threat of flooding. It is said that this princess who floated in the sea reached this place on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka.

King Kavantissa built the Vihara Maha Devi, the queen of King Kavantissa, the ruler of Ruhuna at that time, to commemorate the landing place of Ruhuna. Historical records state that this temple was built in the 2nd century.

Built on a rocky outcrop on the Kirinda beach, this temple has a Bo tree, a temple house and a statue carved in the posture of worshiping Goddess Vihara Maha Devi. Located in a very pleasant environment with a clear view of the land and the sea, this is a popular shrine among Lakdiva Buddhists.
