Description

One of the most popular Buddhist temples in Colombo, Gangaramaya temple is famous for its serene surroundings and serene atmosphere. The temple has a unique architecture and is located on the banks of the famous Bera Lake. On the opposite side of the lake are several statues and intricate carvings. It marks the entrance to the Gangaramaya temple.

Gangaramaya temple was built in the late 19th century by Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera of Hikkaduwa. As soon as this temple was built, it became popular in Sri Lanka as well as all over the world including India, Thailand and China. This is because of the unique architectural features of the Gangaramaya temple that attract thousands of tourists from all over the world.

Gangaramaya temple is not just a place of worship. It also functions as a learning center. This temple is hosted by Sri Jinaratana Training Institute. The institute manages nearly 40 training centers, all of which offer various vocational courses.

Gangaramaya temple entrance fee:
  • For foreigners - USD 5.00 (LKR 100)
  • No entry fee for the locals
Gangaramaya temple opening hours: Every day of the week from 6am to 10pm
