Budugala Rajamaha Viharaya

Budugala Rajamaha Viharaya is a temple located in the Balangoda Kaltota area in the Ratnapura District of the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka and is associated with many ancient heritage sites of ancient archaeological value.

This sacred place got this name this is how it came to be known as 'Budugala' due to the presence of a bright Buddha made of gold in a cave. It is also said that Hemamala and the Tooth Prince lived under the care of a Brahmin near the historical Budugala Kuragala and built a Temple of the Tooth to provide protection for the Tooth Relic for a while.

At present many historical facts about the Budugala Raja Maha Vehera known as Punchi Mihintale are given in the book 'Budusasuna Bebalunu Palana Pudabim' written by the archaeologist Chakravarthi Ellawala Medhananda Thero.

To the beauty of the most beautiful nature budugala Rajamaha Vehera with a roof until the relatives say according to the past division in the middle of Kadawatha in the Sabaragamuwa District.it is located adjacent to the Mahawalatenna Plateau in the Hela Udapattu of Korale.

Also very special is the standing Buddha statue which depicts the two seal fault seal built at the Budugala Rajamaha Viharaya. According to history, the Budugala Rajamaha Viharaya is a forest monastery. This temple can also be identified as a part of the Great Forest Hermitage associated with the historical Kuragala sacred area. The best evidence of this is the tunnel from Kuragala to Budugala Vihara. But now you are not going to the name of the place where the old Budugala was.

The present Budugala Rajamaha Viharaya which existed in this archeological site until the late 1960s was brought to its present location adjacent to it by around 1970. However, the present Budugala Rajamaha Viharaya is like a mirror that confirms the aforesaid facts.
