Description

Giritale Lake, built by King Agbo II (608-618 AD) is another unique lake located in Polonnaruwa. The Minneriya-Giritale Nature Reserve is located in the vicinity of this lake. You have to go around the lake to see the beauty of Giritale. There are no words to describe that coolness and that ease.

The Culavamsa states that King Agbo II or Agrabodhi II created three tanks. These are Kantale, Neralu and Giritale lakes. Giritale can be identified as the most beautiful lake among them.

It is said that Giritale Lake has been created as the deepest lake among these tanks. Like Kaudulla Minneriya, Giritale is an elephant sanctuary at one time of the year. As the water level in the lake dwindles, the ground is filled with lush nipples as well as the great wonders that come with playing on the ground.
