Description

Abhaya Wewa is the first lake in Sri Lanka to be built in Sri Lanka, located in the sacred city of Anuradhapura District in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is also known as Basavakkulama Wewa. It was built in the 4th century BC by King Pandukabhaya who ruled for 70 years. This great tank king spreads over an area of 265 acres. It has a capacity of 1910 acre-feet. The length of the bund is 3900 feet.

The UNESCO National Commission of Sri Lanka has stated that this Abhaya Wewa, built during the Anuradhapura era, is to be declared a World Heritage Site.
